The Cardiff Review publishes fiction, nonfiction, poetry, book reviews and interviews.
We welcome submissions in English, from anywhere in the world. However, we give reading and publication precedence to students currently on a related postgraduate course (i.e. Creative Writing, English Literature or Journalism) or, alternatively, who have recently graduated and have yet to publish a major work.
Fiction and non-fiction submissions should be between 1500 and 5000 words. Micro-fiction should be under 500 words. One work per writer.
Individual poems should be no longer than 50 lines. Two poems per writer.
Occasionally, we have books that need reviewing—you can of course keep the copy of whatever book you are assigned. If you would like to be added to our list of reviewers, please email email@example.com with either a link to a writing sample or one attached to your email.
Illustrations and Photography
We publish visual art in conjunction with written work. The Cardiff Review will place call-outs for illustrations and photography as they are needed. If you would like to be added to our list of visual artists who receive call-outs, please send your name, contact information and preferred medium to firstname.lastname@example.org.
We're currently accepting comics to include in our digital and print issues.
We do not accept previously published writing, which includes blogs and online portfolios.
We accept submissions via email. Please send as a .doc (.docx) attachment to email@example.com; the name of the file should mirror the name of the work. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, though we ask that you notify us immediately should your work be accepted elsewhere and your submission will be withdrawn.
A short bio in the body of your email is recommended, as it will be included with the piece should it be chosen for publication. Your email should also include:
Programme of study
Expected date of completion
Your document should be double-spaced in Times New Roman with 1 inch (2.54 cm) margins. The title of your story should be in the header of the document and page numbers inserted in the top right corner.
Please do not include identifying information on the work itself.
Response times vary and may be as long as three months. If after that you have not heard from us, we are happy to answer email queries.
We look forward to hearing from you and reading your work.
Please note—as the magazine transitions from print to online and conducts a fundraising effort, we cannot, unfortunately, offer payment.
